Asphalt road is designed strictly for the topography, weather and traffic, but it gets aged, because of load of vehicles, change of temperature, etc. Especially plastic element and asphalt element in asphalt get hardened and elasticity gets lost, which will cause crack

Types of Crack

Temperature Shrinkage Crack

Cracks happen in asphalt road because of contraction and expansion according to the temperature change. When temperature decreases and asphalt gets hardened, surface pressure of asphalt produces the cracks in horizontal and vertical direction. Cracks in vertical direction occurs a lot in joint part of the road.
Fatige Crack

Fatige Crack

Crack caused by fatigue happens normally in block type. It is caused from level of aggregate material and soft ground. Crack caused by fatigue of cover, happens in vertical direction around 30㎝ of corner, and not in horizontal direction. It is because side way cover does not have enough power to hold.

Reflective Crack
When putting cover over existing cover without sealing the crack, crack will occur also in the over-coated cover. When putting cover over existing cover, crack in existing cover and crack in new cover will both get bigger, and crack in new cover will become composite crack. It will decrease the plane level and water will penetrate as well.

If crack is left ignored

Rain will penetrate through the cracked area, and when moisture gets stacked up in ground level, it will decrease the intensity of the road and create even bigger crack. Asphalt cover contracts in winter and expand in summer. When rocks and dust get inside cracked area, lifespan of the road will be reduced.

Phase of Cracks

Checking up the condition of the road should take place at least twice(summer and winter) a year. Those are the best time to check the progress of crack.

Phase 1

Phase 1 : First crack occurred in joint according to the width of equipment during covering
- Cutting
If sealed in this phase, effect will be maximized and increase the lifespan of the road(Cutting method should be used).

Phase 2

Phase 2 : Crack created from crack made in joint. Also called branch crack
- Cutting and No Cutting
Cutting or no cutting should be divided according to the shape of vertical crack. Branch crack uses no cutting and just sealing. Where the crack is regular will be cut and otherwise no cutting is used.

Phase 3

Phase 3 : Crack occurred when cracks of phase 1 and 2 are ignored. Also called sprout crack
- cutting, no cutting, patching complex work
Crack with many sprout cracks, caused by quality decrease of asphalt it self. Cutting, no-cutting and patching method should be used. Sprout crack needs cutting and 2 way vertical crack needs no cutting

Phase 4

Phase 4: Crack that reduces the effect of sealing
- Reconstruction
(crack repairing should not be used) But when reconstructing, crack should be sealed(in no cutting) for precaution

Phase 5

Phase 5 : Life of the road is done, should be reconstructed
- Reconstruction(crack repairing should not be used)
Classification of Crack
Hair size crack Less than 0.2㎝ in width
Small crack Less than 0.2㎝ ~ 1㎝ in width, about 2㎝ in depth
Medium crack Less than 1㎝ ~ 2㎝ in width, more than 2㎝ in depth
Large crack More than 3㎝ in width, more than 3㎝ in depth
